In today’s weakened economy, families throughout the country are struggling to cover the rising cost of gas, groceries, health care and other necessities. I believe workers who put in an honest day’s work should be able to provide for themselves and their families. But in too many cases, that’s just not happening.

Preventing Medicare Cuts for Our Seniors
Posted By Brad Ellsworth
2008-08-20 14:17:53
Americans receive some of the best health care in the world, when they can access it. But too often, cost prohibits people from getting insurance or adequate coverage and seeking care when they need it. America’s seniors – who live on fixed incomes and often have significant medical needs – are particularly vulnerable to the rising cost of health care. Medicare has a long track record of providing them with access to affordable, quality care, and Congress must make the tough decisions necessary to keep the program strong.

Keeping Our Commitment to America's Veterans
Posted By Brad Ellsworth
2008-08-20 14:08:08
Sixty-four years ago this week, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the GI Bill into law. The idea behind the bill was simple: provide our brave men and women returning from the battlefields of World War II with the chance to go to college and pursue the American Dream. Since its passage, millions of veterans have benefited from the educational opportunities provided in the original bill, but the law needs to be updated to address the needs and concerns of today’s veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Last weekend, gas prices in cities and towns throughout Indiana set new records yet again. While many Hoosiers are impacted by these outrageous prices, our veterans -- who often live on fixed incomes and have to travel great distances for health care-- are being hit particularly hard. So this week, I co-sponsored legislation designed to give them some relief.

With fall just around the corner, August was full of action as Hoosiers scrambled to squeeze in the last of summer plans. My calendar was full of activities and announcements starting with the Indiana State Fair, Indiana Navy Week, and the grand opening of the new Louis Dreyfus soy biodiesel plant. As we head toward the end of summer, we look forward to yet another busy and successful season.
