August in Review
On the Road with Community Leaders
During the month of August, I spent time on the road meeting with groups from all over the state. I joined community leaders in Anderson, Bartholomew, and Morgan counties to discuss current growth opportunities and issues affecting those areas. It was the perfect time to talk with Hoosiers about ways we can improve the state together.

and two local producers—Patriot Fuels and Integrity Biofuels—I announced that this year all the Midway rides were running on soy biodiesel. It was a great real-life demonstration that renewable Hoosier energy can power everything from a Chevy Tahoe to a Tilt-a-Whirl. The fair drew nearly one million visitors this year. It continues to be a fun, family tradition showcasing Indiana agriculture, but it wouldn’t be possible without the help of many, many volunteers. I want to send a special thanks to everyone who helped make the nearly two-week event a big success. Check out the Indiana State Fair from my point of view. |

Thousands gathered near the small town of Claypool to be part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Louis Dreyfus plant. Hoosiers waited in line for hours to tour the plant, which is a $150 million investment and will bring more than 70 good-paying jobs for Hoosiers.
Lt. Governor Skillman congratulates Louis Dreyfus on their grand opening.

UNCF Holds “An Evening of Stars Gala” at Governor’s Residence
As an honorary co-chair of this year’s events for the United Negro College Fund, I had the pleasure of hosting the corporate reception “An Evening of Stars Gala” at the Governor’s residence. Hundreds of supporters gathered to recognize Nelnet, The Sallie Mae Fund, United Water and WellPoint for their generosity in supporting the UNCF’s annual fundraiser. As education continues to be one of Indiana’s top priorities, I was pleased to see so many Hoosiers involved in this worthy cause.
I proclaimed August 20-26 as Indiana Navy Week to showcase to Hoosiers the exceptional work of the United States Navy.
Among the many events planned to honor our men and women in uniform
were a lunch at the Governor’s residence,
performances by the U.S. Navy Parachute Team and the Blue Angels Flight Team, and a rock n’ roll concert by the U.S. Navy Horizon Band. As always, Hoosiers proved to be dedicated supporters of the U.S. military.
