Getting Your Refund

Dear Friend,

Each year millions of dollars in federal tax refunds go unclaimed by American taxpayers. This year, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reports there are 115,478 taxpayers nationwide who have unclaimed tax refund checks totaling about $110 million. In Indiana alone, 1,628 Hoosiers are owed money by the IRS. You may be one of them.

In most cases, a tax refund goes undelivered when the IRS or U.S. Postal Service does not have the taxpayer’s current address on file. In order to receive their refunds, taxpayers must simply update their address with the IRS. You can learn more and see if the IRS owes you money by visiting the 8th District Online Office.

I believe it’s important for Congress to put more money back in the pockets of middle-class families. That’s why the first bill I introduced in Congress was the Child Tax Relief Act to ease the burden on new parents by doubling the child tax credit to $2,000 in the first year of a child's life, or in the first year after a child is adopted.

In addition, earlier this month I voted to provide income and property tax relief to thousands of Hoosiers. The bill cuts income taxes for approximately 35,450 households in the 8th District by preventing them from paying the higher Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). It also allows homeowners who do not itemize to deduct their property taxes from their federal income taxes.

I was proud to support these commonsense proposals, and I will continue to look for ways to reduce the tax burden middle-class families face.

Sincerely,

Brad Ellsworth
