Lt. Gov. Skillman: January Closes with Huge Job Announcement

Lt. Governor Skillman Wraps-Up January
with Huge Job Announcement

Expanded business, new jobs and stronger communities have been a recurring theme during the past few years and the first month of 2008 was no exception. January began with the start of a new Indiana legislative session and ended with new jobs for Hoosiers.

High-Paying Jobs for Hard Working Hoosiers

As January came to a close, I joined executives from Cummins Inc. to announce 500 new, high-paying jobs for Hoosiers. Last year, Cummins announced 600 production jobs. This year’s new crop of jobs is professional, including many engineering positions.

Cummins has long been based in Columbus, and is dedicated to building a stronger community. Cummins’ expansion plan includes

the opening of a new four-story 100,000 square foot facility in the heart of downtown Columbus. Not only is the company bringing great jobs, they are proving themselves a great community partner by contributing to Columbus’s downtown revitalization in the process.

Saluting Our Hoosier Heroes
The largest deployment ceremony in our state’s history since WWII took place on Jan. 2 at the RCA Dome. We celebrated the dedication and service of 3,400 National Guardsmen and women in an inspiring ceremony. This deployment makes the Hoosier state number one in the country with 4,515 troops on active duty. No state, including large states like California, is represented more than Indiana.

I’m proud of Hoosier service men and women for the sacrifice they are making. However, their absence weighs heavily on their families. I should know. I've got an Army

wife, a Navy officer, an Air Guard Reservist and the girlfriend of a National Guardsman on staff, and they all tell me that the support of their fellow Hoosiers is needed and appreciated.

You can support the troops by joining me in helping Blue Star Mothers. Blue Star Mothers are a national non-profit organization that provides support for our troops. The group is comprised mostly of mothers who have sons or daughters serving or have served in the military. You can read about my meeting with Indiana Blue Star Meetings as well as info on how you can support our troops at my Web site, http://www.in.gov/lg/.

Chamber Members Convene for Economic Progress Update
I met with business and community leaders at the Greater Speedway Chamber of Commerce meeting. I always enjoy my time at these chamber meetings as they are an excellent opportunity to connect to local community and business leaders.

Their hard work and partnership with our state’s Indiana Economic Development Corporation led to an increase in the number of jobs all across the state. Since 2005, IEDC in partnership with local leaders has created 60,000 new jobs from 500 companies totaling more than $14 billion in investment. This amazing accomplishment is possible because businesses large and small are realizing the benefits that come with investing in our state’s future.

Highlighting Hi-Tech Hoosier Women in the Science and Technology Industry
The opportunity to celebrate Hoosier women for their contributions to our state is always an honor that I feel privileged to take part in. I spoke at the Women & Hi Tech’s Leading Light Awards, which recognized women who made contributions in the science and technology industries. These women were honored for their expertise, professionalism and leadership.

I know the challenges women sometimes face in the workforce. The walls that once blocked women are coming down thanks to those women who are succeeding in all areas of the workforce. I thank the recipients of the Leading Light Awards, who are certainly breaking barriers and clearing a path for our future women leaders.

Sincerely,

Becky Skillman
