Waterman: Local Families receive Hoosier Homestead Awards

(STATEHOUSE)State Sen. John Waterman (R-Shelburn) announced that several local families received Hoosier Homestead Awards today from Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman during a Statehouse ceremony. Families honored today include:

  • The Neihart Family of Coal City - farm founded in 1854
  • The Carter Gobin Phegley Family of Carlisle – farms founded in 1838 and 1876
  • The Alvin Scott Gobin Family of Carlisle – farm founded in 1876
  • The William R. Gobin Family of Carlisle – farm founded in 1838

“Family-owned farms are the backbone of the Hoosier economy,” Waterman said. “Maintaining a family-owned farm since 1854 is a significant achievement. The Keisers are to be congratulated for their hard work and many contributions to the Hoosier economy.”

Hoosier Homestead Awards were established in 1976 and are presented twice annually to family farms

that:

  • Have been owned by the same family for more than 100 years
  • Consist of more than 20 acres
  • Produce more than $1,000 worth of agricultural products each year
  • Farms 150 years old receive Sesquicentennial Awards and farms 200 years old receive Bicentennial Awards

According to Waterman, nearly 4,500 farms have been designated Hoosier Homesteads since the program began.

Indiana ranks second in the nation in the percentage of prime farmland and over half of the state’s land is involved in crop production.

Waterman serves Senate District 39, which includes Clay, Greene, Knox, Daviess, Owen, Sullivan and Vigo Counties.
