Waterman: State debt to local governments
will be repaid one year ahead of schedule
(STATEHOUSE) – More than $7 million the state owes to local governments in Senate District 44 will be repaid by the end of May; one year ahead of schedule, announced State Sen. John Waterman (R-Shelburn), today.
A prolonged period of deficit spending, which began in 2002, led to the payment delays to K-12 schools, higher education and local governments, which totaled nearly $800 million statewide, Waterman said. In 2006 Gov. Mitch Daniels ordered repayments to begin. To date $518 million in back payments have been made, he added.
“We’ve been working hard at the Statehouse to watch our spending and our efforts have paid off,” Waterman said. “I’m glad we’re able to pay off this debt even earlier than expected.”
The amount each county in District 39 will receive is as follows:
ü Clay - $673,253
ü Daviess - $775,556
ü Greene - $646,986
ü Knox - $1,106,180
ü Owen - $398,400
ü Sullivan - $576,444

According to Waterman, the funds will be forwarded to auditors in each county who will then distribute the appropriate amount to other taxing units.
