Roy Clark Community Building

Before explaining why the community building is named the Roy Clark Community Building, a person probably needs to know who Roy Clark is.  Roy Clark was born on April 15, 1933, and became a country music idol.  He is renowned for his appearances as the host of the famous TV show Hee Haw.  Clark learned music at the age of fourteen and won several music awards by the age of seventeen.  He appeared on The Odd Couple and The Tonight Show, both of which he played a song which was the start of his fame as a country music singer and guitarist.  At the age of thirty Clark was playing on tour with big country names and was signed to a record label.  Clark’s career did not slow down until he had a hip replacement at the age of seventy-two.  After recuperating, he continued working to entertain his fans.

On April 14, 1998, the Linton City Council voted to name the new community building the Roy Clark Community Building, located on the north side of Humphreys Park. Originally, City Council President Jack Shelton suggested to the council that the city park be renamed after Clark as a goodwill gesture because of Clark’s numerous shows that were performed during the Phil Harris Scholarship Festival.

The park was not renamed after Clark as the park was already named Humphreys Park, in honor of James Humphreys.  Instead the community building was named for Clark. Naming the building in his honor reflected the appreciation of the city of Linton to Roy Clark for the dedication that he has shown by staying committed to the project and to the city of Linton.
